One Family Church at 500 S. Highland Ave. will offer its fellowship hall as a cold weather shelter on January 29 and February 1, from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m.

 

Guests can expect dinner and breakfast, with space for up to 35 residents.

 

Pets are not allowed at this location.

 

First Methodist Church Apopka, at 201 S. Park Ave., will also open its doors January 31, from 6:30 p.m. to 7 a.m.

 

These shelters are part of a joint effort between the city and local faith leaders.

 

Residents are urged to use these resources and check on neighbors needing assistance during the cold snap.

The Apopka Blue Darters girls basketball team paid tribute to seniors Abigail Henry and Elyse Pringle with a moving ceremony before facing the talented Dr. Phillips Panthers.

 

Despite emotional energy, the Blue Darters struggled early as the Panthers opened with a flurry of three-pointers and took an 11-5 lead.

 

Apopka’s determination showed through highlights from Amari Dillon, Destiny Gelin, and Pringle, but Dr. Phillips’ relentless offense pushed the halftime score to 25-7.

 

In the second half, Henry’s tenacity earned free throws, and Pringle connected with Gelin for another three-pointer, yet the Panthers maintained their edge.

 

Mikayla Wiggins and Gelin contributed late buckets, while Dillon sparked a rally, though Dr. Phillips held firm, winning 47-30.

 

Coach Brittany Hardy expressed pride and encouraged her team to finish strong, honoring their seniors as the season continues.

An Apopka man died after suffering a medical emergency while driving on I-4 in Hillsborough County, Florida.

The man lost control of his vehicle, crossed multiple lanes of traffic, and collided with a barrier wall.

Emergency responders attempted to resuscitate him, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

It is believed that the medical emergency led to the crash, and there were no other injuries reported.

The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating the incident.

Crave BBQ recently closed its Rock Springs Road location but maintained a presence through pop-ups at Propagate Social House and Market on Fifth, delighting fans with their sought-after bread pudding and barbecue.

The brewery has been a staple in the community for the past five years, but they have decided to move to a yet-to-be-disclosed location due to ongoing issues with their current building.

The owners, who are also brothers, plan to continue brewing and serving their signature craft beers at the new location.
