Apopka Fire Department Withholds Details on Bus Crash Victims

Seven individuals hospitalized following school bus collision; officials cite privacy concerns

The Apopka Fire Department has chosen not to disclose information regarding the seven individuals hospitalized after a school bus accident on August 15 at the intersection of Votaw Road and North Park Avenue.

Lt. Jerold Maynard stated, "Out of respect for patient privacy, we are unable to release any medical status information or related details." He emphasized the department's commitment to the health and safety of the community, ensuring that all involved received immediate medical attention and safe transport to appropriate facilities.

The incident occurred at 7:55 a.m. when an Orange County Public Schools bus rear-ended a van at the specified intersection. First responders described the accident as "minor," noting that some students experienced pain. Crews continued to assess students individually as they exited the bus to meet waiting parents.

Apopka Police Department Sgt. Jennifer Rudich confirmed that the bus driver was at fault but did not provide information on any repercussions. The accident report remains unavailable. Orange County Public Schools spokesperson Michael Ollendorf indicated that the driver was not suspended, stating that drivers involved in such accidents are typically cleared to return to work.

This incident coincided with a separate law enforcement situation at Apopka High School, leading to a temporary "secure/hold" status. During this period, buses were diverted to Apopka Memorial Middle School's parking lot, located a block from the accident scene. The high school has since resumed normal operations.

The community remains concerned about the well-being of those involved, respecting the privacy measures taken by the Apopka Fire Department.
