Local faith-based organizations collaborate to provide warmth and meals for residents in need |
As Apopka braces for a significant drop in temperatures, local churches are stepping up to offer shelter and hot meals to residents in need.
One Family Church, located at 500 S. Highland Ave., will open its fellowship hall as a cold weather shelter on Thursday, January 29, and Sunday, February 1, from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m.
Guests will be provided with dinner and breakfast during their stay.
Approximately 30 to 35 residents can be accommodated comfortably.
Pets are not permitted at the shelter.
In addition, First Methodist Church Apopka, located at 201 S. Park Ave., will open its doors on Saturday, January 31, from 6:30 p.m. to 7 a.m.
These efforts are part of a collaborative initiative between the City of Apopka and local faith-based organizations to provide safe, warm spaces for residents during the cold snap.
Mayor Bryan Nelson emphasized the importance of community support during such times, stating, "We have such a strong faith community."
Residents are encouraged to take advantage of these shelters and to check on neighbors who may need assistance during the cold weather.
